Lauca National park
The Lauca National Park covers an area of 137.883 hectares and it is in the county of Putre, province of Parinacota. It integrates the pre-mountain range and the highlands of the northeast end of the Region of Tarapacá. It has occasional rains in summer and snow in the winter; the climate is dry with an average of 280 mm. of annual rainfall and an average temperature that oscillates between 12 and 20°C during the day and -3 at -10°C in the night.
In general, the landscape of the Park is irregular. Here one can admire beautiful volcanoes that stand out like Parinacota, at 6.342 masl; Pomerape, at 6.282 masl; Guallatire, at 6.060 masl. and Acotango, at 6.050 masl. In addition to this, in the sector of the highland (that embraces great part of the central area of the Park) there are volcanic boilers like the Ajoya and Tejene and fields of lava as the Cotacotani.
The areas of the park that are highly recommended to visit are the lake Chungará, the Cotacotani lagoons, the bofedales and thermal baths of The Caves. On the other hand, there are places of archaeological and historical interest that is also worthwhile to know. These are the town and church of Parinacota, the town of Chucuyo and the halting place of Chungará, Ajata and Cruzane.
Access Road:
The main access to the Lauca National Park is the International highway CH-11 that unites the towns of Arica and Tambo Quemado. It crosses the Park through the centre and it consists on two paved roads of excellent quality and travel able the whole year.
Other roads of secondary access are: for the north central part, the Route Visviri-Parinacota; for the Southwest the Route TO-231, through the portezuelo of Chapiquiña; and for the South the Route TO-235 that allows the access from The Vicuñas National Reservation. All these roads correspond to non-paved roads of regular quality, but passable the whole year. During the months of January and February it is necessary to use vehicles of double traction to travel the route TO - 235 that connects the Park in The Vicuñas National Reservation and the rest of the Protected Wild areas existent toward the south of the highland.
Tourist information
Administration of the Area:
It is located in the town of Parinacota at 19 km. from the Lake Chungará and at 46 km. from the town of Putre. The sub-administration of the Park is located in Putre, provincial capital of Parinacota. The schedule of attention in the different nurseries is from 09:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 01:00 p.m. to 05:30 p.m. every day of the year. In the town of Parinacota works a centre of environmental information, where the visitor is receive and provided with general antecedents of the unit.

Observation and Cultural Journey: In all the areas of The Caves, Rocky Refuge The Caves, Incan Chacus, The Caves and Tambo of Chungará, Church of Parinacota, town of Chucuyo and the halting places of Chungará, Ajata and Cruzane.

Trip paths:
Several paths have educational purpose, which also favour the observation of natural or cultural resources.
Degree of difficulty on the paths:
They present the natural difficulties of a path located to 4.500 msnm. Journey not recommended to carried out for those affected by the height. The trip paths are self guided, with notes provided to the visitor on request.
Cotacotani Trip path:
This path is 8 km. long and takes approx. 4 hrs. of travel.
Parinacota Trip path:
This path is 3 km. long and takes approx. 1 hour of travel.
Lodging and feeding:
There are only three rustic type restaurants, of villagers' property, in the town of Chucuyo, where one can find drinks and typical foods. Outside the Park, there is a Inn and two restaurants that offer feeding facilities.

Services outside the area:
Petrol: There is no near places where to charge petrol, and occasionally you might find some in the supermarkets La Paloma, Cali and Eca.

Police Control: There are two police control at the Park: Control Chucuyo and Chungará costume border path. Near to the Park, in the town of Putre, the 3rd. Police station is located.
